Smoky black is the result of one cream gene (CRcr) on a black base. Their coat is generally unchanged, having a black color.
This gene is incomplete dominant, which means that the resulting dilution of the coat will be different with one and two copies. One copy only affects red, while two, red and black. This is why the black color of the coat isn't diluted.
A black base plus two copies (CRCR) will result in a smoky cream, with a cream coat, mane and tail.
Here is a punnett square showing how the gene behaves:
cr | CR | |
---|---|---|
cr | Black (cr/cr) | Smoky Black (cr/CR) |
CR | Smoky Black (CR/cr) | Smoky Cream (CR/CR) |
